Metuchen, N. J.
Jan. 17, 1907.
Dear Mr. French:
I am sending
you an advance copy of my
new book. If after reading
it, you feel that without
doing too much violence to
your New England conscience
you can say something in
it’s favor, and allow me to
quote you, I shall be very
[page break]
much obliged.
For the first time I am
doing what countless other
authors have done, even Kipling.
Making a little try on my
own account for a large
sale of my book. It seems
horribly mercenary, when one
reflects upon the title.
With best wishes to you and
yours for the New Year.
Mary E. Wilkins Freeman
